Liverpool supporters are desperate to find out the latest on Basel attacker Mohamed Salah, who the club are attempting to sign in the January transfer window, but it looks like the story could take a few more twists before it is resolved.
On Monday, Al Jazeera reported that the Egyptian was about to sign a four-year-deal with the Reds in a move worth around £7m. So far, so good.
However, later that day, stories emerged from Russian newspaper Izvestia claiming that Zenit St Petersburg could offer around £12m for the Basel man, a significant improvement on Liverpool's bid, and one that could entice the Swiss club to pressure the player into moving to Russia.
The good news for Liverpool supporters however is that the player appears to be keen on a move to the Premier League, something that could work in the Anfield club's favour. His agent, Sascha Empacher, noted at the start of the week that 'talks with Liverpool are ongoing. They want him, but they need an agreement with Basel'.
We should find out in the coming days if Salah's desire to play in England is enough to force Basel to sell him for a lower price than they would command from the Russian side. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano is convinced that the player could be sold for around £15m, but with Basel looking for more, and Liverpool looking to pay less, a compromise will need to be found if the deal is to be resolved.
