Liverpool are closing in on the £10 million signing of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can, Goal understands.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has already indicated that the club - who came close to an unprecedented Premier League title win this season - will be active during the transfer window.

Rodgers has already outlined the type of player Liverpool are interested in signing this summer as the club prepares for a campaign back in the Champions League.

"We're after players that are hungry, that have ambition to become better players," he said prior to the friendly victory over Shamrock Rovers.

"We need technical players that can play in a fast game and we need technical intelligence."

Leverkusen are planning to use the sale of Can to partly fund a move for Hamburg midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.

Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer had hoped to keep Calhanoglu at the club, but they need to sell players to ease their financial struggles, with debts believed to be in the region of €100 million [£81.4m].

Leverkusen's offer for Calhanoglu could be too difficult to resist, paving the way for Can to make the switch to Anfield.

Can made the move to Bayer Leverkusen from Bayern Munich in August 2013 and has experience in the Champions League despite only turning 20 in January.

The move to sign Can was expected to be complicated by the presence of a buy-back clause for Bayern in his contract, but Liverpool now look set to get their man.
