Liverpool have edged ahead of AC Milan in the race to try and sign Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler.
Milan have been monitoring the Napoli man over the past few months as they look to try and bolster their midfield, but attentions have now turned to out-of-favour Chelsea man Michael Essien.
The Merseyside club have long been admirers of the Swiss international and boss Brendan Rodgers could be ready to make a swoop in the January transfer window, according to reports.
The Reds are set to be without Brazilian midfielder Lucas for an extended period and Inler could be drafted in as an immediate replacement.
Inler has been on the radar of a number Premier League clubs in the past and could now be allowed to leave the Italian side after falling down the pecking order under new boss Rafael Benitez.
