Jay Spearing believes the tough approach adopted by new reserves boss John McMahon is helping to bring the best out of Liverpool's young guns.
The 20-year-old trains with the first team these days but still runs out for the reserves when called upon.
And he told Liverpoolfc.tv that summer recruit McMahon is a different type of manager to predecessor Gary Ablett.
"He's come in and stamped his authority down," said Spearing. "He's told the lads exactly what he wants and the lads have took a step back and listened.
"He's a different type of manager to Gary, who was more laid back in the way he'd tell you to do things.
"John really gets on at you but that's what makes him a really good manager and it looks like it's working well because he's getting some good results.
"Sometimes the young lads need telling what they are doing wrong, but John works it both ways as well - he'll tell you when you're doing something right."
