Steve Gerrard is the player England fans want as their captain this summer, according to a poll in Match of the Day magazine.

The Scouser took 39 per cent of the vote when readers were asked who should skipper the side in the wake of John Terry's dismissal.

Wayne Rooney came second with 29 per cent, with only 15 per cent choosing Rio Ferdinand.

Gerrard wore the armband in place of the injured Ferdinand as England beat Egypt 3-1 at Wembley on Wednesday.
