John Carlin appeared in Liverpool's forward-line during the first decade of the 20th Century, making his debut at Stoke on 17th January 1903.

This was his only game of the 1902-03 season and was the only match missed by the Reds' star striker Sam Raybould, who scored 32 times in the 34 games he played.

John played only five times in 1903-04 but did score his first goal in the 4th of those matches, a 2-2 draw at West Bromwich Albion. The highest number of appearances he made in a single season was the 16 he managed during 1905-06.
