Steven Taylor is set to quit Newcastle United for Liverpool after becoming frustrated by the club's lack of ambition as they return to the Premier League.
Taylor, 24, has been at Newcastle for a decade but is now keen to leave as owner Mike Ashley refuses to endorse major transfer spending.
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has bid £6million for former England Under-21 centre-half Taylor and that may be enough for cost-conscious Ashley. A Newcastle source said: "Steven is frustrated over the lack of ambition. Like all Newcastle fans, he just wants the club to become a force again."
Taylor also wanted more club backing after a fracas with team-mate Andy Carroll recently. Newcastle have signed defender James Perch from Nottingham Forest for a cut-price £1.25m.
