Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing has rejected the chance to join Wolves on loan.
The 22-year-old was offered to the club on a season-long agreement with a logjam of central midfielders available at Anfield.
But Spearing has opted to stay and fight for his place under manager Kenny Dalglish, despite the arrivals of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson plus the return to fitness of Steven Gerrard.
McCarthy is considering his options and has also been offered Manchester City's Michael Johnson.
But Spearing today decided to stay put.
He said: "The first I heard about the Wolves stuff was in the papers and it's not something that's been discussed.
"I'm just getting on with giving everything for this club. I've got more competition to fight against now but that doesn't bother me.
"Hopefully, I can now kick on even with the signings."
