Rennes general manager Pierre Dreossi admits the club are likely to have seen the last of Sylvain Marveaux.
The highly-rated midfielder is set to undergo groin surgery on Wednesday, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
With his contract set to expire in the summer, it is expected that he has now played his last game for the club.
The likes of Newcastle and Liverpool were believed to have expressed an interest in Marveaux during the January transfer window, and could return once the 24-year-old drops into the free agent market.
Dreossi believes that will be the case, with Rennes aware that the player's representatives have already opened dialogue with a number of potential suitors.
"We will never see Sylvain Marveaux in the jersey of Rennes again," he said.
Former France U21 international Marveaux has spent his entire career to date with Rennes, making over 100 appearances for the club.
