Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is closing in on Rennes right-back Rod Fanni.
The France international, 29, could become the first deal masterminded by Liverpool's new sporting director Damien Comolli.
Fanni has also had interest from Marseille and Atletico Madrid, but Liverpool are hoping Comolli's French connections may help them clinch a cut-price £3m deal in January.
The player is believed to favour a move to the Barclays Premier League and Comolli will be hoping to fend off the other clubs after his recent appointment.
Rennes have major financial problems and want to complete a deal that would see all of the transfer fee paid up front, which could force them to sell to Liverpool next month.
Rennes are hoping to strike a deal in the next few days.
