Liverpool made a clear statement to the rest of the Barclays Premier League in January when they recruited two young stars in Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez as they attempt to overhaul their squad.
Now it appears as though manager Kenny Dalglish and director of football strategy Damien Comolli have identified Real Madrid youngster Sergio Canales as a possible summer addition.
The Spanish international was only signed by Madrid in the summer from Racing Santander but has struggled to force his way into Jose Mourinho's plans.
Facing competition from the likes of Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, Sammi Khedira and Angel Di Maria, the talented youngster has found himself sat on the sidelines for much of the season and recently revealed his unhappiness at the situation.
"I'm not happy, but I'm not going to leave Madrid, only fight and work hard to get more opportunities," Canales told Spanish newspaper AS. "Playing in Madrid is complicated and I knew it would not be easy.
"I came with enthusiasm and was aware that playing for a big team is very complicated, because there are great players and competition is high. So I have to try to exploit all my opportunities."
"With the team and the coach I am very happy. I wish I had more minutes, but you have to work hard," added the creative midfielder.
The versatile 19-year-old would provide Liverpool with some much needed creativity.
Canales also fits in with Liverpool's new transfer policy which aims to bring young players to the club.
