Rangers have rejected a bid from Liverpool for teenage defender Danny Wilson but expect the English Premier League club to return with an improved offer.
Highly rated centre-back Wilson has refused a new deal at Ibrox but Rangers are determined not to let a prized asset leave on the cheap.
Manager Walter Smith confirmed that they had received a firm offer for the player, who has attracted attention from a number of English clubs.
"We are currently waiting to hear back from Liverpool after we rejected their original £2million offer," the Rangers boss told the Sunday Post.
Wilson has one year remaining on his contract but, although he would be free to move a the end of that deal, Rangers would be due compensation. Under rules covering the development of players, that compensation is likely to be in the region of £650,000.
A bid of more than the £2 million currently on offer would likely see Rangers cash in on the talented youngster, who picked up the Scottish Football Writer's young player of the year award for his performances in SPL this season.
Rangers chief executive Martin Bain has said that the club had rejected two offers for Wilson during the January transfer window with Tottenham thought to be the side rivalling Liverpool for the defender's signature. However, with several multi-million pound deals involving teenage players having been agreed in England in the past 12 months, Rangers want to make sure they get the current market value.
