Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has signed a new contract at the club, which will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2016, according to reports in Spain.

The playmaker was linked with a move back to the UK next year, with rumours that he had options to join Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester United on a free transfer after his contract came to an end at Real Madrid.

Alonso's season has so far been hampered by injury, but it seems the 31-year-old has done enough to convince Carlo Ancelotti of his value to the club in the handful of appearances he has made in November.
