Mario Gomez's hopes of joining Liverpool on loan from Bayern Munich appear to have been scuppered.
The Germany international has been mulling a move to Anfield, but his £125,000 a week wages were a huge stumbling block and Bayern have indicated they aren't prepared to help push the deal through.
Roy Hodgson is desperate to sign a striker today and is still interest in West Ham's Carlton Cole, but Bayern Munich sporting director Christian Nerlinger said no players would be leaving his club.
'Bayern Munich are not a superstore for other clubs to come and help themselves to players,' he said. 'No player will be leaving and they will certainly not be leaving on loan.'
The stance will be a blow to Gomez. The 25-year-old's agent Uli Ferber said: 'When a club like Liverpool enquires, their interest cannot be pushed off the table.'
Liverpool want a striker to take the burden off Fernando Torres's shoulders. They have been rebuffed in their efforts to sign PSV Eindhoven's Ola Toivonen but have some cash left over from Javier Mascherano's sale to Barcelona.
They can offer around £6.5m for Cole but, while the player would want the move, West Ham will want a lot more cash.
