Liverpool target defender

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa while Sunderland also remain keen on the player.

Figueroa has impressed during his time at the DW Stadium and Wigan face a battle to keep hold of him after Liverpool also declared their interest in the talented full-back.

The Reds are on the look out for a new left-back as Argentine ace Emiliano Insua looks set for a £5m switch to Italian side Fiorentina and boss Roy Hodgson sees Figueroa as the ideal replacement.

The news will alert Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, who has been chasing the defender for the last 12 months and has failed with at least one offer for the player.

A bidding war could be on the cards and that can only be good news for Wigan who will want to earn as much as possible if Figueroa is to move on this summer.
