Liverpool suffered a painful night in Portugal, finishing the game with 10 men as Ryan Babel's red card led to a Benfica fightback that saw the home side triumph 2-1.

Daniel Agger gave Rafael Benitez's men the perfect start in Portugal, producing a wonderful piece of trickery to back heel Steven Gerrard's free kick into the corner for an early lead.

However, Babel's sending off changed the game as the referee looked favourably on Benfica, who easily could have lost Luisao in the same incident.

Liverpool were the victims of some strange decisions all night but they can have little complaints about the two penalty decisions that swung the tie - both converted by Oscar Cardozo.
