Liverpool move for Suarez stalls

Liverpool could be forced to abandon their pursuit for Ajax striker Luis Suarez after talks between the two clubs stalled.

The Reds had made the Uruguay international their top transfer priority for new boss Kenny Dalglish in the January transfer window.

Director of football strategy Damian Comolli flew out to Amsterdam on Monday morning for discussions with Ajax.

The Dutch club, however, refused to buckle on their £25million asking price for the 24-year-old, £10m more than Liverpool had bargained for.

Suarez is keen to quit Amsterdam for Merseyside but Liverpool are reluctant to pay anything more than £18m for the star and are running out of time to complete the deal.

Ryan Babel could yet be offered as a makeweight despite boss Dalglish announcing he would be staying at Liverpool after the winger failed to agree terms with German club Hoffenheim over a £5.8m deal.

The Anfield club are eager to recruit a new frontman to bolster their attack and ease some of the burden on striker Fernando Torres.

Should the Suarez deal collapse indefinitely, the Barclays Premier League club could show a late interest in Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo.
