Liverpool have rejected claims that they have had any discussions with Chelsea over a transfer for Yossi Benayoun , despite widespread reports that a deal is as good as done for the midfielder.
It was reported yesterday that the 30-year-old had agreed to a four-year contract with Chelsea and that he is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days before putting pen to paper on a move to Stamford Bridge.
The Israeli enjoyed another solid season at Liverpool, scoring nine goals in 42 appearances, but suggested late in the campaign that the uncertainty surrounding the club's future could see him leave Anfield.
Late last month, Benayoun said that he anticipated a move to Chelsea, saying, "[Chelsea Manager Carlo] Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool. Chelsea will have to pay some £6million but I believe that in the end I'll be moving there," he then said.
However, the Liverpool Echo claims that "Reds officials have moved quickly to make it clear they have not entered into discussions with their Chelsea counterparts - nor are they in any hurry to do so."
The Liverpool Echo also reports that Benayoun is almost certain to leave Anfield this summer, having set his heart on securing a final big money move late into his career. Yet Liverpool officials are reluctant to let Benayoun leave without a fight.
Benayoun's Liverpool contract is set to expire at the end of the 2012/2013 season.
