Liverpool are confident they will complete the signing of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Jones early next week after lodging an improved bid for the Australian.
Boro have refused to be budge over the sale of the 28-year-old and are believed to have secured the fee - around £2.5m - they were looking for after refusing to accept Liverpool's first offer.
Jones is ready to travel for to Merseyside for a medical over the weekend once he has received permission to talk to Reds boss Roy Hodgson, who is looking for an able deputy for No 1 Pepe Reina.
Hodgson said: "I haven't spoken to (Liverpool managing director) Christian Purslow because he is in London with the rest of the board, but I'm hoping that transfer will take place and the sooner the better."
