Rafa Benitez and David Moyes had what can best be described as a pragmatic working relationship during the Spaniard’s time on Merseyside.
Indeed, it wasn't until last season that it approached anything near cordial when Benitez took Moyes up on the offer of having a drink in his office after the Reds' 2-0 win at Goodison last November.
Given that Roy Hodgson took Moyes under his wing for a week when Everton's manager was taking his UEFA Pro-Licence badge in 2001 at Udinese, it is likely that relations between Merseyside football's main men will be thawed.
Or will they? It was mischievously suggested to Hodgson as he chatted with the media on Thursday that derbies might be more friendly affairs now, given his relationship with Moyes. Don't believe it.
"I am pleased for his success and remember very fondly the time we had together but I think that Liverpool will always be Liverpool, and Everton will always be Everton," he pointed out.
"I don't think you could have your best friend sitting on the other seat and your worst enemy on the other. I don't think it will change a lot."
