Manchester City winger Adam Johnson is set to discuss his future at the club with boss Roberto Mancini this week, following speculation linking him with a move elsewhere.
The 24-year-old has failed to hold down a regular first-team spot since his arrival from Middlesbrough in 2010, starting just four Premier League games last season, and now wants to establish how his manager intends to use him next term.
Mancini has been critical of the winger in the past, most notably publicly telling him to improve his all-round game following a man-of-the-match performance against Wolves last October, with the player reportedly initially refusing to board the team coach home in the aftermath.
Moves to Sunderland or Liverpool had been mooted, with Johnson thought to be discouraged by his current standing at the Etihad Stadium following his England squad snub for Euro 2012.
It is believed that City are looking for a fee of around £15 million for a player who agreed new terms on a five-year-deal just six months ago, with Brendan Rodgers reportedly keen to bring the midfielder to Anfield.
Wages of around £70,000 a week have forced Martin O'Neill to cool his interest, with the Stadium of Light salary ceiling set at £60,000, but the new Liverpool boss is reportedly prepared to enter negotiations with the City hierarchy.
