Fabio Capello is set to announce whether Rio Ferdinand or Steven Gerrard will be captain against Montenegro.
The England boss must decide whether to retain stand-in captain Gerrard or to restore fit-again centre-half Ferdinand, who would have led the side at the World Cup had he not been crocked.
Ferdinand is set to start at Wembley on Tuesday night, with or without the armband, but not alongside John Terry who has been ruled out of the match with a back problem.
Gerrard was overlooked by Capello when the Italian first took over as England manager in favour of retaining Terry as skipper.
However, the Chelsea man was subsequently stripped of the armband over allegations over his private life, with Ferdinand taking over.
Gerrard was considered next in line as official vice-captain and stood in for the Manchester United defender after he was injured in pre-World Cup training.
The Liverpool skipper has impressed in the role against Bulgaria and Switzerland in the Euro 2012 campaign so far, and could continue despite Ferdinand's return.
