Liverpool could be set to beat Arsenal to the signing of Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata after lodging a loan bid.
Morata is out-of-favour with Real manager Carlo Ancelotti, but is regarded as a hot prospect for the future.
Arsenal were thought to be the frontrunners to land Morata in January, following injuries to Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner. However, Liverpool are looking to trump their title rivals with Brendan Rodgers making a loan offer for the 21-year-old, according to Spanish sports paper Marca.
Marca claim that the Reds want to loan Morata for the rest of the season, but Madrid are in no rush to negotiate.
The Spain U21 hitman has played just 12 times for Real this season, used predominantly as a back-up option to Karim Benzema.
