Kenny Dalglish has targeted yet another left-back in his search to find a replacement for the now departed Paul Koncheskey who sealed his move to Leicester last week.
The latest defender to interest Dalglish is Hamburg's Marcell Jansen who can play either as a left-back or on the left wing. The 25-year-old has been capped 36 times by Germany and was present at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cup.
The Scot had initially highlighted Gale Clichy as his number one target but the French defender chose to join Manchester City.
Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique has also been touted as a possible signing but the Spaniard would prefer to move to a team competing in the Champions League and has been linked with Arsenal.
Jansen has a wealth of experience in the Bundesliga having played for Borussia Monchengladback and Bayern Munich before joining Hamburg for €8million in the summer of 2008.
Much like Clichy and Enrique, Jansen is known as an attcking full-back who would certainly provide some attacking threat from deep positions.
Much like Glen Johnson on the right hand side of defence, he would certainly provide plenty of width and assist the midfielders.
Liverpool have already secured the services of England winger Stewart Downing and Dalglish is keen to add a left-back to his squad capable of supporting the former Aston Villa winger.
The Reds struggled in wide areas last season both defensively and in midfield and Dalglish is determined to address this problem. Liverpool will hope they will be successful in their £8million pursuit of Jansen as it would most likely end the mark of the summer spending.
Dalglish will also hope that the signing of Jansen would add some much needed balance to the team with the naturally left-footed defender working with wide areas with fellow left-footer Downing.
