With an increasing clamour from fans and former players alike for Kenny Dalglish to return to the Anfield hotseat following Rafa Benitez's departure, the ECHO looks at how other bosses fared second time around
HARRY REDKNAPP
Redknapp left Portsmouth for fierce south-coast rivals Southampton, only to return to his "spiritual home" 13 months later. He saved the club from relegation, won the FA Cup in 2008, before departing for Tottenham.
WALTER SMITH
After assisting Graeme Souness in two Scottish title successes, Smith took over when his fellow Scot returned to Anfield and led Rangers to seven more in a row before leaving for Everton after missing out on a 10th. Returned in 2007 and has so far taken the Gers to the UEFA Cup final as well as a further two league titles, two Scottish Cups and two league cups.
FABIO CAPELLO
The king of comebacks, the England boss won La Liga in a one-season spell at Real Madrid in 1996-97. He then returned in 2006 and despite his controversial handling of David Beckham, led Real to their 30th La Liga title as they pipped arch-rivals Barcelona.
STEVE BRUCE
Left Wigan after only two months in his first spell after losing in the 2001 Division Two play-offs. He returned in 2007 and made some inspired signings, such as Wilson Palacios and Antonio Valencia who kept the club in the Premier League and went on to bank them huge profits before leaving for Sunderland.
TONY PULIS
Was battling to save Stoke from relegation to the third tier in his first spell when he left after falling out with the club's Icelandic owners in May 2005. Returned a year later with the club under new ownership and guided the club to the Premier League - and comfortable survival for two seasons.
FABIO CAPELLO (AGAIN)
Won four Serie A titles in five seasons with AC Milan and enjoyed a 58-game unbeaten run in charge of the likes of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Paolo Maldini, Marcel Desailly and Franco Baresi. The Rossoneri also won the 1994 European Cup, routing Barcelona 4-0 in the final. But Capello's return was an ill-fated one, Milan finished 10th in the 1997-98 season.
KEVIN KEEGAN
Led Newcastle to the Division One title and 2nd place in the Premier League consecutively in his first spell in the 1990s. Hailed as the 'messiah' after taking over from Sam Allardyce in 2007, he resigned after winning just six out of 21 games after falling out with owner Mike Ashley.
HOWARD KENDALL
Kendall had three spells in total in charge at Everton. He won the FA Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and two league titles in a historic first stint. However, his next two attempts were much less successful, managing only mid-table finishes second time round and his third spell in 1997/98 ended with the club only avoiding relegation on goal difference.
JOE ROYLE
Royle became a legend at Oldham after leading them to the League Cup final in 1990 and two FA Cup semi-finals between in 1990 and 1994, as well as English football's top flight. He returned in March 2009 with the club mid-table in League One but left two months later having won just one of nine games.
GRAHAM TAYLOR
Watford were in the old Division Four when Taylor first took the reins in 1977. He guided them back to the First Division in just five years and an FA Cup final appearance in 1984. After stints in charge of Aston Villa and England he returned to the club in 1996 and guided them back into the Premier League. But it ended in disappointment as the club went straight back down and struggled in Division One.
