Joe Cole 'has been adopted' by Lille fans after earning a standing ovation for his performance against Lorient in which he scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw.
While his team-mates at Liverpool brushed aside the disappointment of back-to-back losses to Stoke and Tottenham by beating Wolves 2-1 on Saturday, Cole, on loan from Anfield, was rifling in a superb effort from 25 yards for Lille.
He becomes the first English player to score a Ligue 1 goal since Chris Waddle in March 1992.
Former Chelsea and West Ham player Cole was substituted with three minutes remaining and left the field to a standing ovation from fans, during which French TV station Canal Plus said: 'He has now been adopted.'
Kevin Monnet-Paquet denied Lille the victory with an equaliser for Lorient in added time.
Lille have drawn their last four games in all competitions, blowing the lead three times in the last five minutes. They are sixth after eight games.
