Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is refusing to give up on signing Mohamed Salah from Basel despite Chelsea agreeing a fee for him.
The Blues confirmed on Thursday that they had agreed a fee with the Swiss side, thought to be in the region of £12m, and the winger was expected in London for a medical and to discuss personal terms.
As a result, that appeared to scupper Liverpool's chances of landing him with Chelsea prepared to pay up to £16million with add-ons while the Reds had apparently valued the Egyptian at no more than £10m.
However, Rodgers has not quite given up on the deal yet as he admitted Salah had been a player who has been on his radar for several months.
He told talkSPORT: "I'm not sure whether that deal is definitely done yet or not. "The young guy is a good player. We have tracked him for a number of months, the club has been watching him and I have been to watch him.
"It is one where the agent of the player and the clubs were talking but if the deal can't be done, the deal can't be done. I know the club has been working very hard to get players in. I"ll leave that to them and see how they get on.
"He's a boy that is a talent. He is 21 years of age and people saw his qualities in the games against Chelsea and Tottenham in Europe, but you need to have that list because if it doesn't work out then you are hoping there are one or two others."
The Reds boss is hopeful of making some signings in what is left of the January transfer window but insists he will not bring in new players just for the sake of it.
He added: "It is a very difficult market. It is hard to bring in players that can improve the team, especially in this window. I'd rather wait and look at our young players than bring in one or two squad players."
