Gael Clichy is ready to rebuff interest from Roma in an attempt to force Arsenal into letting him join Premier League rivals Liverpool.
Serie A side Roma are preparing to trump Liverpool's opening bid of £5million for France defender Clichy, but he favours a move to Anfield.
His stance leaves Arsenal in a difficult position having let the left-back's contract run down to within 12 months of its expiry.
Arsene Wenger ideally wants to sell abroad, but is eyeing Newcastle's Jose Enrique as a possible replacement for Clichy and could reluctantly do business with Liverpool, who are also trying to secure the services of teenage striker Connor Wickham from Ipswich.
Liverpool will have to match Sunderland's opening £9m offer, but Sunderland's deal rises to £11.5m depending on the player's progress and Ipswich owner Marcus Evans is adamant England Under-21 international Wickham will not be sold for less just because he prefers a switch to Merseyside.
