Arsenal and Liverpool's defensive frailties will not be improved by the signing of Philippe Mexes.
The two Premier League clubs were reportedly interested in the French centre-back but Roma are now set to extend his contract, according to reports in Italy.
Arsenal's recent signings Sebastien Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny have failed to convince and Liverpool are desperately short of defensive cover with Jamie Carragher facing up to three months out with a dislocated shoulder.
Mexes has been highly thought of around Europe for a number of years and clubs were on red alert this season as it appeared Roma were not able to meet the players financial demands.
Unicredit, the Italian club's shirt sponsor, however, have stepped in to help secure the services of the 28-year-old.
The new deal will keep Mexes at the club for a further four years and earn him up to £3m per season.
