Cally: Shanks broke the mould

He broke the mould. There will never be anyone like him ever again. I had 14 wonderful years with him and I'll always treasure them.
 
I was playing as an amateur when I first met him. I worked in Liverpool and jumped on the bus to get to Melwood for training. He had just arrived as the new manager and came along to see us in action.
 
He must have watched a few games because the next thing I knew I was put in the reserves. I only played a couple of games at that level too, before I got told that Mr Shankly wanted to see me with regards to signing professionally.
 
So I went to see him and told him that I had an Apprenticeship as a central heating engineer which was a job for life really. I wanted to be a professional footballer but I was worried what my Mum and Dad would say!
 
He went to see my parents and I remember him coming along in this big car and all the kids were running around shouting about it.
He made a huge impression on my Mum and Dad, but they told him that at the end of the day it was up to me.
 
In all the time I worked with him, we never had an argument. I never asked for a pay rise, he always came to me and told me the lads were getting more money and that so was I.
 
It was a fantastic time in my life.
 
I suppose his biggest asset as a manager was that he was such a motivator. He'd make you feel 10 feet tall as you ran out onto that pitch.
 
If you look back, I think Bob Paisley was more of a tactician. They were two opposites really and I think that's what gelled them together. Bob had a big influence on how the team played, but as a motivator, you'll never meet anyone like him.
 
I go to the games today and walk through those gates and I think to myself how the place is all about Bill Shankly. They were in the Second Division going nowhere when he arrived. He came in and just transformed the club within such a short space of time.
 
He'll always be a part of Liverpool. People loved him.
