Cally: I hope Carra breaks record

Liverpool’s record appearance holder Ian Callaghan has paid Jamie Carragher the ultimate accolade by declaring he would love to hand over his crown to the Reds No.23.

Callaghan made 857 appearances in the red shirt between 1960 and 1978 and Bootle's finest is set to make his 600^th appearance for Rafael Benitez at Portsmouth today.

There is a mutual appreciation between the pair and Callaghan claims there is no reason why Carragher can't surpass his record.

"Records are always there to be broken and if anybody was to break the record I achieved then there is nobody better than Carra," Callaghan told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I went onto the pitch and did the presentation for Jamie when he made his 500^th appearance at Anfield and to get to 600 quickly just shows you how fit and consistent he is.

"You don't get many players getting to 600 appearances these days so it is special achievement, especially in this day of age with rotation.

"Jamie is a fantastic player and he is a great example to everybody. He has to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

"People say he had a little bit of a sticky start to the season but he is back to his best now. The thing you always get from Carra is 110 per cent commitment every game.

"He is always talking to everyone all of the time and he keeps the other players on their toes and makes sure they keep their position.

"He has fantastic enthusiasm and he is a real credit to Liverpool Football Club."
