BR: That was for Stephen and Phil

After watching his side claim three points against Southampton on Saturday, manager Brendan Rodgers dedicated the victory and performance to two members of the Liverpool family who were lost this week.

Academy U9 player Stephen Packer passed away last Sunday following a battle with cancer, and the club mourned the death of former player and manager Phil Taylor yesterday.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the 1-0 triumph, Rodgers insisted that his focus was on remembrance and tribute. "The win is devoted to two families," said the Northern Irishman.

"Firstly, young Stephen Packer and his family. Stevie was a young U9 player for us who unfortunately passed away with cancer last week - it's devastating for the family and we wanted the result for them as a pick-up."

A minute's applause was held in Stephen's honour before the meeting with the Saints kicked off, and his parents have launched a fundraising campaign which you can support.

Respects will be paid to Taylor, who made 343 appearances for the Reds and managed the club immediately before the arrival of Bill Shankly, when the side next plays at Anfield - against Aston Villa on December 15.

Rodgers continued with a personal tribute to Taylor: "Secondly, for our former player, captain and manager Phil Taylor, a club legend who passed away.

"The win was for them and the performance was devoted to them. All of us were very keen to do that and give that little bit of hope to the families."
