Reds 2-2 Birmingham City

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Birmingham at Anfield - and only got that much thanks to a controversial penalty.

There appeared to be no contact when David Ngog went down under a challenge from Lee Carsley, but referee Peter Walton awarded a spot kick.
 
The returning Steven Gerrard, introduced as a substitute after an injury to Albert Riera late in the first half, slotted home the penalty to make it 2-2 with 19 minutes to go. 
 
Birmingham had fought back well to lead 2-1 having conceded an early goal to Ngog, who scored after Joe Hart had twice made fine saves in the same move.
 
Christian Benitez nodded the equaliser before Cameron Jerome smashed home a stunning 35-yarder shortly before the break.
 
On the balance of play, Liverpool undoubtedly deserved their equaliser, but the way it came about will anger the Blues.
 
As a result of their point, Liverpool stay seventh and they are now 11 points behind leaders Chelsea having played the same amount of games.
 
Birmingham stay 15th but are now two points above the relegation zone.
