Sidney Ross was Liverpool's first choice goalkeeper in the club's only season in the Lancashire league. The majority of the regulars in the side had the prefix "Mc" in front of their names so the team was known as "The team of Macs". Liverpool Echo noted at the time that "it was amusing to hear Ross frequently greeted by humourously-inclined spectators behind the goal with cries of 'Play up, MacRoss'."
