John's 11 league appearances for Liverpool all came in the 1912-13 season. He actually scored on his debut against Oldham and played in the first six matches before losing his place. He wasn't recalled until March 1913 and played a further five games before the end of the season.

Tragically Tosswill died only 24 years of age, on September 28, 1915, following an operation.
