Inside-right Smith played 10 games in the Lancashire league and scored five goals, but was not as prolific in the cups. Smith later scored 12 goals in 35 games for Second Division Newcastle United. He died at an early age in February 1911 and Newcastle gave his widow a benefit match at St James' Park.
