Hewitt was a forward who had several seasons at Anfield during the first decade of the 20th Century. He was signed from Sunderland during the 1903-04 season and quickly won a place in the side, playing in the last 10 First Division fixtures but being unable to stop the club's slide into the Second Division.
He only figured nine times in 1904-05, which was not enough to win a Second Division championship medal. He was a key member of the team the following year when the First Division title was won for the second time in the club's history. Joe was easily Liverpool's top-scorer in the League that year with 24 goals from his 37 appearances.
Injury kept him out a lot the following year but he returned to form towards the end of the decade, scoring 33 times from 69 games in the 1907-08 & 1908-09 seasons. Hewitt made four more appearances in 1909-10 before being transferred to Bolton Wanderers.
Hewitt was a member of Liverpool's staff for several years after his retirement in 1911.
