James figured four times as a full-back early in the 1903-04 season. He actually played in four of the first eight First Division matches that season, games which resulted in three defeats and one draw. It was a pattern which was to become all too familiar during the rest of the season and Liverpool were eventually relegated from the First Division with only 26 points from 34 fixtures.
