Holmes was a defender who made 44 league and FA Cup appearances for Liverpool during the 1890s.

Nineteen of those came in his debut season (1895-96), the year that the club won the Second Division championship for the second time. He played in fewer fixtures the next season, 13 in total, when Liverpool returned to the First Division after an absence of just one year. The last dozen of his league games came in 1897-98.
