Paterson played twice in Liverpool's forward-line during the last full season before the outbreak of the Second World War.

He made his debut in a home fixture against Stoke between Christmas and New Year 1938 and his second and last league appearance came in the 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa on February 18, 1939.

Paterson also figured once in the FA Cup and scored Liverpool's second goal in their 3-0 third round victory over Luton Town at Anfield on January 7, 1939.

George later joined Shankly's coaching staff at LFC.
