Goalkeeper Frank Lane was signed from Merseyside neighbours Tranmere Rovers in September 1971 as cover for Ray Clemence.

Injury to the club's first-choice custodian meant Lane was thrown in at the deep end for his league debut at Derby on 2 September,  1972.

Frank kept his place for the League Cup tie at Carlisle United 3 days later, but Lane never played a first-team match for the club again.

After a long period of reserve-team football he was eventually transferred to Notts County in July 1975.
