One of club's earliest-ever players, William was at Anfield for just one season (1896-97), only Liverpool's second season of First Division football after their promotion as Division Two champions in 1896.

William played in the forward-line and although he was selected for 19 of the 30 league matches, the longest run of consecutive appearances he made was just nine. He scored four times and the club comfortably held on to their First Division status at the second time of asking by finishing in a respectable fifth place.
