Shears was a defender who was at Anfield for four seasons in the 1920s but only made 16 league appearances during that time.

He played in two games towards the end of the 1925-26 season and added another eight games to his total the folloowing year. However, it would be nearly a full year before he was selected again and after playing in four matches in 1927-28, his last two appearances for the club came in consecutive games against Derby County and Sunderland early in December 1928.
